About Us

The Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ABGH) is a non-profit organization founded in 2021 by gastroenterologists and hepatologists from across America for the purpose of addressing health care disparities in gastrointestinal and liver diseases disproportionately affecting Black communities.

The backdrop of 2020 was a painful reminder of how health inequities manifest. With the COVID-19 pandemic, Black communities have suffered disproportionately with higher rates of hospitalizations and deaths. During this time, we also mourned the untimely passing of Chadwick Boseman at the age of 43 from colorectal cancer. Unfortunately, his story is not unique as Black men and women have the highest rates of colorectal cancer incidence and mortality compared to all other racial and ethnic groups. These disparities in health are preventing Black persons and communities from attaining their full health potential. In collaboration with colleagues across the country, ABGH was launched to address these issues.

ABGH could not exist without the strong foundation of mentors, sponsors, senior colleagues and existing national gastrointestinal organizations who have supported us and demonstrated interest in helping us achieve our vision collaboratively. We are indebted to you and are appreciative of all of your efforts.
